The key steps to make my first call

Just carry out these simple steps!

Step 1 - Purchasing a Phoneserve calling card from your local vendor.

Step 2 - Downloading the phone

Download the software onto your PC (we recommend that you save the downloaded software onto your PC and then run it rather than install the software directly from our website). Please check your PC meets the minimum PC requirements.

Step 3 - Installing the phone

After installing the Phoneserve software make sure you test it's working correctly by double clicking on the Phoneserve icon and following the instructions when prompted. You can then establish yourself as one of two types of users:

  • Internet cafe operator (select this if you are set up to provide Internet services in a public environment)
  • Home or Business User (all other users)

  • Now simply double click on the Phoneserve icon on your PC to start making calls.

Step 4 - Making your first call

When you make your first call you will be asked to:

  • Enter your country that you currently live in
  • Enter the type of Internet connection you have
  • Confirm your telephone dialing rules
  • Configure your sound settings using the audio tuning wizard
  • Enter your Phoneserve account number
  • Enter you PIN (Personal Identification Number)

  • Your phone will then appear on the screen, showing your current balance – and the word ‘Ready’. You are now ready to make cheap international calls! Simply type in the phone number you want to call and click on the green phone button. When you have finished your call, press the red phone button.

How do I dial a number?

To make a call just enter the full telephone number (including the international dialing code) and then click on the green phone icon (or press "enter"). To hang up, simply press the red phone icon (or press "escape").

If you need to find an international dialing code simply click here to visit a recommended website.

    Tips on Dialing...

  • You can dial a phone number using the numbers on your keyboard or by clicking the number buttons on the Internet Telephone with your mouse
  • You can cut and paste a phone number instead of having to type it in every time
  • You can substitute your international prefix with '+'
  • You can quickly access any of the last ten numbers you called simply by right clicking on your phone

  • Internet Telephone Dialing Rules

To set the Internet Telephone dialing rules, please right-click on the phone / click on 'Options' / click on 'Dialing Rules' / now set these as follows:

INTERNATIONAL DIALING PREFIX: Enter your international dialing prefix (e.g. 00 if you are calling from Europe or 011 if you are calling from North America).

MY COUNTRY CODE: Enter your country code (by doing this you will be able to dial numbers for this country without dialing your country code all the time).

NATIONAL DIALING PREFIX: Enter your national dialing prefix (e.g. 0 for UK, France, Germany; 1 for the USA; for other countries it is normally BLANK).

Can I test my Internet connection Speed?

Your Phoneserve Internet Telephone will work better with a fast and reliable Internet connection.

You can easily check your Internet connection speed by sending a small series of data packages to and from the servers, and have the response times displayed. The result will show you if your internet connection speed is sufficient enough to use our service.

    To run this test:

  • Select Start/Run from your desktop
  • Type Command and click Ok

  • [A DOS prompt will open]
  • Type PING 62.189.6.22 and press Enter

  • Four data packets will be sent, and will return the link times and an average time for connection.

    Example

In this example, the average speed is 29ms.

    The ping test

The following quality bands apply to our service based on these speeds:

    From

    To

    Description of quality

0 150 Voice quality is virtually perfect.
    150 300 Perfectly acceptable quality.
300 350 Some deterioration in quality likely.
350+ Quality deteriorates to the extent that the service may be unusable. The phone can disconnect.

How do I improve my connection speed?

There are several ways you can increase the speed of the service:

  • Use an alternative Internet Service Provider (ISP) who offers a quicker connection to the Internet. Different ISPs can certainly provide very different results.
  • Use a faster Internet connection.
  • Avoid calling at peak Internet traffic times.

  • Please check your PC meets the minimum PC requirements.

How do I install my USB Handset?

The Phoneserve Internet Telephone works with most USB audio devices, but some devices may require additional drivers to support additional functionality, such as keypads.

  • Phoneserve UP-90

  • Install the Phoneserve Internet Telephone as normal and then download and install the appropriate USB driver afterwards.

Do I need to configure my firewall to use Phoneserve?

Your PC is probably protected by a firewall and your Broadband modem may be protected as well by a built-in firewall. Generally firewalls filter incoming and outgoing traffic (data) without interference, but on occasion you may need additional configuration changes on ports to allow the service to work.

The Internet Telephone uses a number of ports to send data to our servers, and if these ports are blocked by a firewall the phone will not work correctly (one-way audio or the phone cannot get connected).

Check your PC firewall and your Broadband modem built-in firewall and make sure that:

  • The file 'CS_Phone.exe' is allowed
  • The ports 6801/6802 (RTP/RTCP-UDP)* are open

  • * Please note that these RTP/RTCP-UDP ports can be changed on the Internet Telephone itself. To change your port settings open the phone and click on the 'i' button. Select 'Options' then 'Advanced'. The following three options will be displayed:

RTP/RTCP ports 6801/6802: when the phone is installed the setting will default to 'RTP/RTCP ports 6801/6802'. This will work for the majority of networks, broadband and DSL connections.

Use the following RTP/RTCP ports: this option allows you to select specific ports to match your firewall configuration. Use this option if ports 6801/6802 are unavailable on your network. If you require assistance with the selection of the ports please contact your system administrator.

Dynamically allocated RTP/RTCP ports: this option is not recommended for general use as it selects ports randomly and is therefore unlikely to work on a network with a firewall.

If you require assistance in configuring your firewall please contact your firewall provider for further instructions.

    Windows XP built-in firewall

Because Phoneserve’s technology requires voice packets of data to be transmitted through the Internet to and from your PC, Windows XP users may need to configure the built-in firewall and adjust their security settings before being able to use the service.

    Setting of security level:

  • Right click on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop
  • Select “Properties” from the menu
  • From the Internet Properties dialogue box click the ‘Security’ tab
  • Set the security level bar to ‘Medium’ (or ‘Typical’ on some editions of xp)
